Oprah had a chance to go up to the White House and talk to Michelle Obama for the upcoming edition of ‘O Magazine’

Our new First Lady on the surprises of life in the White House (”If you want pie, there’s pie! If something breaks, it’s fixed. In an hour”)…the rules she’s laid down for Malia and Sasha (”I want the kids to be treated like children, not little princesses”)…and how she hopes to use “one of the best jobs in the world” to help women transform their lives. Here’s a sneak peek…

For all the majesty of the White House, the First Lady has already infused it with a palpable ease; her presence makes the place feel open and approachable. When we sit down to talk, she seems as relaxed as she did when I first interviewed her and her husband in their Chicago apartment in 2004. “This room has the best light in the house,” she tells me as we settle in, shoes off, on a comfortable sofa. “And there’s pie here, too. The pie in the White House is dangerously good.” — Oprah

Oprah: So after the inauguration, what was your first weekend in the White House like?

Michelle Obama: Well, we still had family here, so it was almost like a wedding. A huge, very complicated wedding. The last visitors didn’t leave until Sunday. And then the first Monday was kind of weird. You know: Now we live here, and Barack is getting up and going to work, and it’s just us. This is our home now.

Oprah: I had heart palpitations coming through the White House gate, recognizing that this really is now your home. It’s the White House, and it’s your home.

Michelle Obama: And it’s a beautiful home. When you go out and come back, especially at night, with all the white lights on–it’s just beautiful. We feel privileged, and we feel a responsibility to make it feel like the people’s house. We have the good fortune of being able to sleep here, but this house belongs to America.

I can’t even imagine walking up into the White House and having black kids running around in “their” house.  It’s crazy.

“I think it’s fair to say that had I not been a Stevie Wonder fan, Michelle might not have dated me. We might not have married. The fact that we agreed on Stevie was part of the essence of our courtship.”

First Lady None Too Happy With Dolls

by YaDig Staff on Jan.23, 2009, under Entertainment

Out of all the Obama collectibles one has met some disapproval from the First Lady and they are the Malia and Sasha dolls created by Westmont-based Ty, Inc the same company that created the Beanie Babies

A spokeswoman for the First Lady said

“We believe it is inappropriate to use young, private citizens for marketing purposes,”

But Ty, Inc company spokewoman Tania Lundeen said

“Sweet Sasha” and “Marvelous Malia” — were chosen because “they are beautiful names,” not because of any resemblance to first kids Malia and Sasha Obama.  ”It would not be fair to say they are exact replications of these girls. They are not,” she told the AP.

Hey make your money off the President and the historic moment but leave the kids alone.  That is unless the profits are going into some college fund.  What am I saying like they going to need a college fund.

Pictures from Oprah and Obama’s Secret Dinner

by YaDig Staff on Jan.22, 2009, under Ya Seen on the Scene

President Obama and Oprah had a secret dinner with special invited guests that took place on Monday at the Blair House.  The band that performed for them was a Chicago Group – The Band of Paquito D’Rivera- led by Mark Walker

Walker said Michelle Obama was already at the party when the band arrived. Winfrey walked in solo, and Barack Obama followed shortly after as the band was playing Miles Davis — an Obama favorite.

“You know, I’m a big Miles Davis fan,” the drummer said Obama told him. “You did your homework.”

“[Winfrey] came in, noticed we were playing and gave us a thumbs up,” Walker said. Later, the Chicago talk show host posed for a picture with the band.

Walker said guests sat at five round tables and feasted on ribs, sweet potatoes, fried chicken, salmon, macaroni and cheese, pie, ice cream and brownies. They also drank Pinot Nior from California, he said.

Winfrey — who sat two seats away from Obama and across from his wife, Michelle– looked great, Walker said.

“They were talking the whole time, having a good time,” Walker said. “I had read somewhere that [Winfrey] was down on herself, but I thought she looked great.”

Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on the wall at that dinner.
